Read About My Drawings

As with my paintings and sculpture these images give voice to the earth and its living creatures. Drawings are sensitive and personal. They connect my hand and the marks I make with a fragile non pretentious honest surface. The truth of the mark is fully revealed in the articulation of line and touch. Through the action of light and dark and the use of charcoal the surface depth becomes deeper and richer. I use charcoal as a strong but gentle, lyrical medium. It gives my hand life and my hand gives it life. My hand and the medium become one. I use charcoal, ink, pencil, whatever medium is immediate and not distant from the contact expression. This material is applied (integrated) unto, into the paper, painted or not, fabric, slate, wood, whatever surface receives it. Paper is both an unforgivable and a sensitive beautiful surface.
The human figure is drawn as both gesture and structure. It is my goal to honor and express its life . I draw the dance, the music, the life felt by the dancer captured in the movement and substantial in its form.
