Read About My Sculpture

The earth’s processes are in flux and change, evolving from one form and idea to another, becoming more or becoming less relevant to our time. The books speak to that change, physically, psychologically, poetically and to the change in human evolution from oral, to written, to the electronic means of communication.

I incorporate the use of actual books in various stages of decomposition as a metaphor for the disintegration and obsolescence of the information, authority, and physical substance that they are. In our culture the book has become the authentic word, to not be questioned or doubted. My manipulations of the books address this issue. The book speaks “about” elements of the earth. The earth speaks for itself when we see and listen.

The piece entitled Portals shows contained and sacred spaces as is reminiscent of shrines, triumphant arches, canopies and enthroned objects. These iconic objects refer to the literary and organic world. This world becomes visual and the information conveyed is not literally read and perceived but comprehended wholly, as is a visual image. The written word, the carrier of ideas and information, is a visual object that tells a story by its presence not by its text. The stories of the organic world (plants and stones) celebrate their presence in a triumphant space. The line forms of wire reference “communication” of the stones and rocks as in writing.

“Young Flight”, a 20ft stainless steel sculpture, is a permanent installation on the Shores of Lake Michigan at St. Joseph MI. It celebrates the children, the sky, the water and the land.
